A couple years ago I preached from Colossians 3:1-4 on the subject “A More Focused Life”.
There is a Chinese proverb: “If you chase 2 rabbits, both will escape.” The gist of the message is that we would accomplish more for the Lord and live a more victorious life if we would simply focus more in what is most important. It all starts with focusing on the Lord Jesus Christ above all. In order to live a more focused life, which in turn will result in a more victorious Christian life, here are 3 things we must do:
1. We must Establish our Priorities
Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Too many people have it backwards. They focus more on “all these things” and put Jesus Christ and the things of God secondary. This doesn’t work. We must determine in our hearts to put Christ first in ALL things. He must be foremost in everything and the center of our lives.
Consequently, we must prioritize the things that please Him such as prayer, reading the Bible, serving Him, serving others, going to church, witnessing, living holy, giving, taking care of our families, etc. These things are considered PRIORITIES, not secondary issues, in the victorious Christian’s life.
2. We must Eliminate what Prevents
Hebrews 12:1-2 “…let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…”
There are things that prohibit and prevent us from maintaining focus on Jesus Christ and the things that please Him. Paul mentions “weight” and “sin”. Sin will obviously hinder us. Therefore, it must be repented of and abandoned.
Then there are “weights” that can slow us down and hinder us from running the race more successfully. Many Christians are “overweight” spiritually. These weights may not necessarily be sinful things. But simply things that hinder us more than help us. Unhealthy things. We must identify these things and eliminate them in order to be more focused in what matters most. Sometimes, “less is more”.
3. We must Execute our Plan
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 “Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”
Once our focus is set on Jesus Christ and the finish line, then we must follow through. This requires determination, dedication, and discipline. What is your biblically-based plan to fulfill the will of God in your life? Whatever it is, we must be focused on doing it. Prioritize what it will take in doing it. Eliminate whatever may hinder you from doing it. And then DO IT!
