“Psychological techniques, even in the name of Jesus, cannot produce spiritual life. It’s time we get back to the Bible!” Dr. David Brown, Pastor, Psychology’s Assault On The Bible
Isaiah 26:3-4 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength”
“Research psychiatrist E. Fuller Torrey found that about 5% of those who come to a psychiatrist are people with organic brain disease while about 75% are people with problems of living. 20% will require closer examination to make a final judgment to determine which category they fit into. Torrey continues that at least 75% of those who come to a psychiatrist do not need treatment but actually NEED TO BE EDUCATED IN HOW TO LIVE.” -Joint Commission On Mental Health
“Frankly, I would estimate that by the time the remaining 20% of the cases are examined that at least 15% would fit in to the “need to be educated in how to live” category, bringing the total to 90%. This study shows that most people are looking in the wrong place for help. The Bible has the answers for life’s problems. Therefore, they need to look to the Bible and biblical counselor for help.” Dr. David Brown, Pastor, Psychology’s Assault On The Bible
Isaiah 8:20 “…if they speak not according to this word, it is because THERE IS NO LIGHT IN THEM.”
Psalms 119:130 “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
I don’t deny that there haven’t been some who have received help from counselors outside of the Bible and Church. But before psychology and psychiatry showed up in the 19th century (Sigmund Freud – 1856-1939, Carl Jung – 1875-1961), people had the Bible and Church and they found all the help they needed for mental health in the Lord Jesus Christ.
I have never had to go to a psychologist or psychiatrist for my mental health needs (discouragement, sadness, anger, depression, anxiety, trauma, etc). Jesus Christ, the Bible, the Church, has always been more than sufficient. Look at the lives of truly dedicated Christians that live life according to God’s word and you’ll find folks that have no need for psychologists. The Lord strengthens them.
How did folks maintain mental health before psychologists and psychiatrists showed up in the 19th century?
Jesus Christ, the Great Physician, was healing the broken way before Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung (both rejected Christianity) ever showed up.
Psalms 147:3 “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”
2 Peter 1:3 “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue”
2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a SOUND MIND.”
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, COUNSELLER, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
Mark 2:17 “When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Nehemiah 8:10 “…the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Psalms 23:1-6 “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”
